John Hammond's partner, George Sullivan, dies in an apparently accidental death, with Hammond the beneficiary of his double-indemnity insurance policy. Since this is the fourth double-indemnity death in the Sam Marlo, California vicinity in recent months, the company assigns investigator Tom Davison to the case. The partner's daughter, Nancy Sullivan, cooperates with Davison in the investigation, and Davison joins Hammond's business as a salesman. Davison is closing in on the gang, led by Chuck Malone, when the gamblers behind the racket kill Hammond, making it appear as a suicide to protect themselves. Davison gets conclusive evidence against the gang when they kill another man for his insurance, but the mob kidnaps Davison. Written by Les Adams <longhorn1939@>

An analogous case is that of the screwball comedy , widely accepted by film historians as constituting a "genre": the screwball is defined not by a fundamental attribute, but by a general disposition and a group of elements, some—but rarely and perhaps never all—of which are found in each of the genre's films. [14] Because of the diversity of noir (much greater than that of the screwball comedy), certain scholars in the field, such as film historian Thomas Schatz, treat it as not a genre but a "style". [15] Alain Silver , the most widely published American critic specializing in film noir studies, refers to film noir as a "cycle" [16] and a "phenomenon", [17] even as he argues that it has—like certain genres—a consistent set of visual and thematic codes. [18] Other critics treat film noir as a "mood", [19] characterize it as a "series", [20] or simply address a chosen set of films they regard as belonging to the noir "canon". [21] There is no consensus on the matter. [22]

Almost every critic has his own definition of film noir and personal list of film titles and dates to back it up. Personal and descriptive definitions, however, can get a bit sticky. A film of urban night life is not necessarily a film noir, and a film noir need not necessarily concern crime and corruption. Since film noir is defined by tone rather than genre, it is almost impossible to argue one critic’s descriptive definition against another’s. How many noir elements does it take to make a film noir noir?
